11/28/2019 7:36:00 PM | Men's Basketball

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Wake Forest opened play at the 2019 Paycom Wooden Legacy with a 65-56 victory over Charleston in a quarterfinal at the Anaheim Arena. The Demon Deacons (4-2) advance to play Long Beach State in Friday's semifinals, while Charleston falls to 3-3 on the season.

Olivier Sarr had 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Isaiah Mucius also posted his second straight double-double, having 10 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Childress had 10 points and six assists while Torry Johnson had 13 points.

The Deacs won despite shooting 35.8 (19-53) percent from the floor and 28.6 (6-21) percent from three by having a 44-32 edge on the board and outscored the Cougars 21-7 from the free throw line.

How it Happened:
The Deacs used balanced scoring early to take an eight-point lead at 20-12 midway through the first half as eight of the 10 players to see the floor scored. The Cougars answered with a late run to tie the game at 26-26 before Wake took a 28-26 lead into the break despite shooting just 33 percent from the floor. Mucius had seven points and seven rebounds to lead the Deacs in the first half.
For the second straight game, the Deacs opened the second half shooting well, making 6-of-8 to open up a 44-34 lead six minutes in. After Charleston cut the advantage to 56-53 with 3:25 to play, the Deacs used a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 10 at 63-53 with just over a minute to play before closing out the 65-56 win.

Quotable:
"I thought we did some good things throughout the course of the ball game. It was a great team win for us as a lot of guys contributed for us. In a tournament like this, you need those minutes. We turn around and play again tomorrow, so we took some minutes off our guys and our bench was outstanding." – Head Coach Danny Manning

Noteworthy:
The Deacs were playing their first game outside the Eastern Time Zone since Nov. 28, 2016 at Northwestern, snapping a 93-game ET streak … Wake Forest improves to 2-3 all-time on Thanksgiving, with both wins coming in Anaheim (def. Cal State Fullerton in the first round of the 2008 76 Classic) … Nine of the 10 players to see the floor for the Deacs scored as Wake had a 26-7 edge in bench points.

Up Next:
Wake Forest will play Long Beach State in the Wooden Legacy semifinals on Friday. The Beach rallied from down 17 in the second half to down Providence 66-65 in their quarterfinal. Game time is 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT) and the game will air on ESPN2. It is the first ever meeting between the schools.
