The Demon Deacons (7-1, 3-1 ACC) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter over the visiting Wolfpack (4-4, 1-3 ACC) and cruised for its seventh win of the season. Wake Forest is 7-1 for the third time in school history and the first time since its record-breaking 2006 season.
Wake's 34-point win today marks the largest margin of victory against an ACC opponent in BB&T Field. The previous record was set in a 31-0 victory against North Carolina on October 26, 2002.
Newman surpassed 2,000 yards passing on the season becoming the first Deacon quarterback to hit that mark in seven games. He completed 25 passes for 287 yards with 30 rushing yards. Tight end Jack Freudenthal caught all three touchdown passes from Newman. Kendall Hinton recorded 93 yards receiving while Scotty Washington chipped in 84 and Sage Surratt had nine catches for 67 yards.
Cornerback Amari Henderson snagged two interceptions and led the team with six tackles. Henderson also had four pass breakups and a tackle for loss in his standout performance.
How It Happened:
Wake Forest opened the scoring with a 20-yard quarterback draw from Newman early in the first quarter. Newman had several key third-down passes to Kendall Hinton and Scotty Washington to keep the drive going.
On the ensuing kickoff, DeAndre' Delaney forced an NC State fumble on the Wolfpack's 3-yard line. The Deacons followed with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Newman to Freudenthal as Wake Forest took a 14-0 lead. After a Henderson interception, Newman powered an 8-play, 74-yard drive that lasted just 2:20 and ended with a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Newman.
Placekicker Nick Sciba kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter followed by an NC State touchdown as Wake Forest led 24-7. Freudenthal caught his second touchdown of the day, a 2-yard catch, midway through the quarter for a 31-7 lead for the Demon Deacons.
Both teams traded field goals as Wake Forest held a 34-10 advantage heading into halftime. Freudenthal caught his third touchdown of the game in the beginning of the third quarter followed by a second interception from Henderson. Sciba added a 26-yard field goal as Wake Forest went up 44-10.
Key Moment:
Wake Forest had two scores within 53 seconds of each other in the first quarter on the Newman 20-yard score and the 5-yard touchdown pass to Freudenthal. The Demon Deacons remained in firm control of the game following the scores.
Defensive Stat Leaders:
Along with Henderson, Trey Rucker and Essang Bassey each had six tackles. Nasir Greer tallied four tackles and two pass breakups.
