Wake Forest couldn't take advantage of a strong third quarter in the 82-74 defeat.

QUEENS, N.Y. -- Gina Conti dropped a career-high 25 points in an 82-74 loss to St. John's at Carenesecca Arena on Friday night.

The Demon Deacons (2-3) fell behind the Red Storm (3-1) at the break, 41-28. Wake Forest stormed back in the third quarter to cut the margin to 55-50, but St. John's went on a 6-0 run early in the fourth to extend the margin back to double digits, 63-52. The Deacs were unable to trim the deficit to fewer than seven points the rest of the way.

"Give them a lot of credit. They really attacked us and got us back on our heels," head coach Jen Hoover said. "We weren't very disciplined, so when we needed a stop, we'd commit a foul instead. Our kids didn't give up and fought to get back into it, but we can't afford to make those mistakes in a tough environment on the road."

Conti scored her 25 points — 19 in the second half — on 7-of-12 shoooting and a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe.

"She got into attack mode," Hoover added. "We need her to cut down on the turnovers, but she did a great job from the free throw line and was able to have success when she got to the rim."

Ivana Raca and Alex Sharp each finished a rebound away from a double-double, as Raca scored 20 points and Sharp tallied 14, with each pulling down nine boards.

Ona Udoh also grabbed nine rebounds and scored six points.

Qadashah Hoppie and Alissa Alston led St. John's with 23 and 20 points, respectively. Tiana England added 13 points, six rebounds, seven assists. and four steals

Wake Forest is back in action on Monday, traveling to Elon at 7 p.m.
