
Deacons Finish Season with Five-Set Victory over North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- Caroline Kuhn tied a career-best 17 kills to lift the Deacons over the North Carolina Tar Heels 3-2 (15-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 15-11) on Wednesday afternoon in the Deacons' final regular season match.
"We are all so proud of the seniors leaving their mark on this team with a win that will be remembered," head coach Randi Smart said. "This win is a tribute to the work ethic of the entire team and their commitment to Wake volleyball and the future of the program."
The Deacs hit .255 for the match and had double-digit kills from Kuhn, Peyton Suess (16) and Olivia Saunders (13). Saunders also added eight blocks while Madeline Holt engineered 39 assists and Caitlin Clarke delivered 21 digs.
North Carolina opened the match with a commanding 25-15 first set victory, hitting .519 in the stanza with no attacking errors. However, Wake began taking advantage of the Tar Heel miscues as North Carolina finished the match with 28 while Wake only had 18 errors in the match.
Wake Forest (14-15, 4-14 ACC) answered back, winning the second set 25-20 behind seven kills (.778) from Saunders. As a team, the Deacons hit .382 with 15 kills and just two errors. After not recording an error in the first frame, the Tar Heels picked up seven miscues in the second set. Wake used an early 5-1 run to take a slight 11-10 lead. The Deacons strung together another 5-0 run, to jump in front 16-12. A kill from Suess sealed the second set win, evening the match 1-1.
The Wake Forest offense momentarily stalled in the third stanza, hitting just .067 allowing the Tar Heels to regain a 2-1 match advantage. UNC used a few efficient runs to take a 15-9 lead. The Deacs battled back chipping away at the Tar Heels' lead and tying the match at 18-18. North Carolina won seven of the final eight points to win the set 25-19.
The Deacons used late momentum in the fourth set to once again even the match. Kuhn led the efforts with a seven-kill set. The Deacon defense held the Tar Heels to a .051 clip as they only notched 12 kills with 10 errors. An attack error from UNC's Lauren Harrison, who had 28 kills in the match, sealed the 25-22 decision as Wake forced a fifth and final set.
Wake had its most efficient set of the match, hitting .444 with eight kills and no errors to win the match. The Deacons opened the frame with a 3-0 run and never relinquished their lead. UNC pulled within one 10-9, but Wake Forest sealed the victory with a block from Saunders and Caroline Rassenfoss.
The Deacons complete the 2019 season winning three of their final four ACC contests.
