WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest got out to a hot start and cruised to a 76-53 win over East Carolina inside the LJVM Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
Four different Demon Deacons (4-3) scored in double figures, and Wake Forest out-rebounded the Pirates (3-5) by a 49-20 margin.
"Rebounding was huge for us. It's an emphasis every day and has become part of our identity," head coach Jen Hoover said. "We've got some great guard rebounders in addition to some of our posts. We felt that with our height advantage, we had to control the paint."
The Deacs also shot 57.4 (27-of-47) percent in the game, limiting ECU to just 31.4 percent (22-of-70).
Gina Conti totaled 19 points without missing a shot. She was 6-of-6 from the floor and 3-of-3 from long range, also sinking all four free throws.
Ona Udoh recorded a double-double with 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting and 10 boards, also blocking four shots. Ivana Raca added 11 points, and Raegyn Branch notched 10 points on 2-of-2 shooting and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Alex Sharp pulled down 15 rebounds to match her career high, also scoring seven points.
ECU took an early 6-5 lead, but Wake Forest held a 17-2 advantage the rest of the quarter to take a 22-8 lead after a period.
The Pirates cut their deficit to 22-13 early in the second quarter, but Raca scored two baskets during a 6-0 run and ECU didn't cut the margin to single digits the rest of the way. Wake Forest held a 39-19 lead at the half and 58-40 lead after three quarters.
Wake Forest racked up 20 assists on 27 field goals, led by three apiece from Conti, Raca, Sharp, Udoh and Alexandria Scruggs.
"This group is a work in progress. Our growth day-in and day-out is going to be big for us as the season goes on," Hoover added. "I thought our kids responded after they came out and attacked us in the second half. We just had to remind ourselves that we've got to dominate the details. It's not about the scoreboard, it's about a box out and about our awareness on the court. As we continue to learn that we're going to get better and better."
