Wake Forest falls at ETSU, 67-60

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Wake Forest battled throughout the game but wound up losing 67-60 at East Tennessee State on Thursday night. Ivana Raca led the Demon Deacons with 18 points while Christina Morra matched her career-high with 13 points. Alex Sharp had eight points and a game-high 11 boards.

Wake Forest (4-4) led 33-31 at halftime and 53-47 through three quarters. But the Deacons hit a dry spell in the fourth quarter, being outscored 20-7 and shooting just three-for-16 from the field. ETSU (3-6) made 12 of 14 free throws in the final quarter.

With Wake Forest holding a 55-54 lead, ETSU's Kaia Upton blocked a shot, scooped it up and went all the way for a lay-up and a 56-55 ETSU lead.

Wake Forest will break for final exams and will return to action on Monday, Dec. 16 when the Deacs host Campbell at 11 a.m. at the LJVM. The game is the annual School Day Game with children from the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools in attendance.

How it happened:

Wake Forest led 21-10 after the first quarter. The Deacs made nine of their first 13 field goal attempts.
ETSU opened the second quarter going on an 8-0 run to close Wake's lead to 21-18. The Deacs led 23-21 when Gina Conti went coast-to-coast for a driving lay-up and free throw to put Wake back up 26-21. Then Christina Morra converted another old-fashioned three-point play to give the Deacs a 29-25 advantage. After ETSU tied the game at 31, Morra hit a turnaround jumper in the paint to put Wake Forest ahead 33-31 at the half. ETSU outscored Wake Forest 21-12 in the quarter.
Tied at 41 early in the third quarter, Wake Forest went on an 10-1 run, fueled by a pair of Gina Conti free throw-line jumpers, and driving lay-ups from Kaia Harrison and Conti. The Deacs led 51-42 late in the third and held a 53-47 lead after three quarters.

Wake Forest hit a dry spell in the fourth quarter, missing six straight field goal attempts and being outscored 13-0 as ETSU took a 60-55 lead. An inside field goal by Ivana Raca with 1:27 to play stopped the bleeding and pulled Wake within three at 60-57. But ETSU made 12 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter.
