WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest erased a 22-21 first quarter deficit and outscored Campbell 53-24 over the final three quarters to defeat the Camels 74-46 Monday at the LJVM Coliseum. The game was the annual School Day game with thousands of Winston-Salem Forsyth County school children in attendance. The crowd of 9,121 accounted for the third-largest home crowd in Wake Forest women's basketball history.
Ivana Raca and Alex Sharp each scored 19 points to lead Wake Forest (5-4) while Alexandria Scruggs poured in 12 points. Raca led all players with eight rebounds.
"Every year with this game, there's an energy and excitement in the Coliseum that is unmatched," said head coach Jen Hoover. "We've played pretty well in these games, and so have our opponents, because these kids cheer for whomever scores. We had some good practices leading into the game today and once we got through final exams, I felt they just went out and played well this afternoon.
"We kept telling the team that Campbell is a really good team, one of the best defensive teams in their conference and they can really shoot the ball."
Campbell's Shy Tuelle scored eight points in the first quarter to lead the Camels to the one-point advantage. Tuelle did not score again in the contest. The Deacons slowly built their lead over the final three quarters, outscoring Campbell by 11 points in the second quarter and 18 points in the third.
Campbell (5-3) was led by Kianna Speight with 11 points while Luana Serranho and Taya Bolden each led the Camels with five rebounds.
Wake Forest will head to Florida where they will play in the West Palm Invitational starting on Friday. The Deacons will play Dayton at 1;30 Friday and then take on Florida at 12:15 on Saturday.
