WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 106-50 victory over Charleston on Friday night at LJVM Coliseum. The Demon Deacons had their first 100-point game since the 2010-11 season and posted their largest margin of victory in nine years.
The win was the 100th victory at Wake Forest for head coach Jen Hoover.
Ona Udoh scored a career-high 23 points to go with 12 rebounds to lead the Deacons. Ivana Raca scored 21 points and Christina Morra had 13 points and 10 rebounds to record her first career double-double.
Wake Forest held Charleston to just 24 percent shooting and held a 60-34 rebounding advantage.
"I'm really proud of our kids and thought everyone was really locked in today from shootaround through the game," said Hoover. "I thought we executed our gameplan early and converted some fast-break chances into easy baskets. We just fed off that energy. I'm proud of Ona Udoh, who just set a tone tonight with her play and how Ivana Raca started the game. She struggled a little bit the other night, so I knew that was going to be dangerous for the next team. In any game when you can get every kid in, and all but one scores, that is a great feeling and they had a lot of fun tonight."
The Deacs jumped out to an early lead, fueled by a 12-0 run, to lead 25-11 after the first quarter. Udoh had 10 points on 4-5 shooting to lead Wake during the opening 10 minutes.
Wake Forest opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run, shutting out the Cougars for the first 4:16 of the period to extend the lead to 35-11. The Deacs led by as many as 29 in the first half before taking a 49-22 lead into intermission. Wake held Charleston to just 19 percent from floor during the opening 20 minutes while forcing 13 turnovers. Raca and Udoh each had 15 first-half points to lead the Deacons.
The Deacs extended the lead to 83-35 at the end of the third quarter before closing out the 106-50 victory.
The 106 points are the most by a Wake Forest team since a 111-47 victory over North Carolina Central in the 2010-11 season opener. The 56-point margin of victory was the Deacs' largest since a 95-36 win over South Carolina State in the second game of the 2010-11 season.
The Demon Deacons will continue their four-game homestand on Sunday, hosting UNCG at 5 p.m. The game follows the men's basketball home opener vs. Columbia at 2 p.m.
