WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest formally begins a year-long celebration of the 30th anniversary of the LJVM Coliseum on Saturday in conjunction with the Demon Deacons' ACC home opener vs. NC State. During Saturday's game, community and university leaders from three decades ago who helped make the facility a reality will be honored.
Prior to the game, Director of Athletics John Currie will lead a panel discussion with community leaders including Mayor Allen Joines, former Coliseum manager Bucky Dame and original Coliseum Commission member Robert Eggleston, Wake Forest leaders including former Athletic Director Gene Hooks, and John Lambert, a Deacon Club leader and campaign volunteer for the Advantage Campaign which helped make the LJVM Coliseum possible, in addition to Robert Siler, who scored the first points in the building.
During the game, key leaders from opening of the facility will be recognized, including longtime Wake Forest athletics director Gene Hooks, former men's basketball head coach Dave Odom, and the family of the late University president Dr. Thomas Hearn. Members of the 1989-90 men's basketball team, the first squad to call LJVM Coliseum home, will also be in attendance and honored.
Since the LJVM Coliseum opened its doors 30 years ago, the building has been home to Wake Forest basketball with over five million fans watching the Demon Deacons. In addition to the Deacs, the Coliseum hosted NCAA Tournament first/second rounds in 1993, 1997, 2000 and 2007, hosted the MEAC and CIAA basketball championships and hosted the 2007 Davis Cup quarterfinal between the United States and Spain. The venue has also hosted countless concerts, conventions and community meetings, including graduations where as many as 75,000 local high school students have received their diplomas.
