Jared Shuster struck out a career-high 11 batters over 6.0 innings in the 5-3 victory.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Sophomore Jared Shuster posted the best outing of his career, leading No. 20 Wake Forest past Georgetown, 5-3, in the weekend finale at David F. Couch Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
Entering the game with a career high of four strikeouts, Shuster fanned more than double that many on Sunday. He punched out 11 Hoyas (0-3) over 6.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk as he earned the first victory of his career. In total, the Deacs struck out 16 Hoyas as Shane Muntz added two, Tyler Witt had one and Antonio Menendez recorded a pair.
"I like the fact that we got a win. I like that Jared Shuster threw the ball really well. I like the fact that Tony came back out there in the ninth and threw the ball really well," head coach Tom Walter said. "I wasn't really pleased about anything in between that, quite honestly. Save a couple of guys, we haven't gotten off to the offensive start we wanted to. Guys are pressing, and that's normal."
Demon Deacon (2-1) pitchers allowed just five earned runs over 27.0 innings this weekend, good for a team ERA of 1.67. The Wake Forest rotation of Morgan McSweeney, Colin Peluse and Shuster tallied a combined ERA of 0.96, surrendering two earned runs over 18.2 innings.
Wake Forest scored twice in the opening inning. Jake Mueller and Chris Lanzilli singled and came around to score on a wild pitch and Georgetown error.
The only time the Hoyas got to Shuster was in the second inning, when they recorded two doubles, including an RBI two-bagger from Alex Gamache. They didn't get a hit off Shuster in any of his other five innings.
In the fourth, Logan Harvey singled and advanced to third on a wild pitch and passed ball, coming home on an RBI groundout by Patrick Frick.
The Deacs plated their final two runs in the fifth. Lanzilli walked and Bobby Seymour doubled, setting up a sac fly from Cole McNamee and Christian Long RBI double, his first of two doubles, to push the Deacs in front, 5-1.
Georgetown threatened in the eighth. After an error and a walk recorded against Witt, Menendez entered the game and Eddie McCabe hit a two-run single against him.
Menendez shut the door after that, retiring the next four batters, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the game and earn his first save.
Wake Forest hits the road for the first time on Tuesday, traveling to Liberty for a 3:30 p.m. game on ESPN+.
