
Deacs Fall Short at Syracuse

Sharp scores 17 in return to the lineup
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team fell to the Syracuse Orange, 77-57, Sunday afternoon inside the Carrier Dome. Alex Sharp led with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists in her return for the Demon Deacons. Miranda Drummond led the way for Syracuse with 17 points and five rebounds.
For the Deacs (10-15, 1-11 ACC), Maya Banks matched a career-high with nine points, along with seven rebounds in a starting role. Floor general Gina Conti added nine points and six assists in a team-high 38 minutes. Redshirt sophomore Raegyn Branch connected for nine points and a career-high eight rebounds. Taking advantage of the short rotation, freshman Lindsay Jarosinski showed flashes, adding eight points, two rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
The Orange (19-6, 8-4 ACC) stormed out to a 12-2 lead early in the first quarter. Sharp didn't seem to miss a beat in her time away, scoring eight-straight for the Deacs including two three-point field goals to shrink the Syracuse lead to five. The communication on defense for Wake Forest was strong. The Demon Deacons scrambled for loose ball rebounds and forced the Orange into uncomfortable position offensively.
Drummond led Syracuse with six points to open the game, including two makes from long range. Wake was able to stifle the Orange's momentum enough to keep the score within seven after one.
The Deacs found a spark in the second quarter, with Jarosinski making an impact on both ends. They outscored Syracuse 11-6 through the first five minutes of the quarter. Wake Forest was able to get to their spot and gain chances for second chance points. Branch had an impressive opening half for the Demon Deacons, securing six rebounds along with six points. Despite outscoring the Orange in the paint, 18-8, the Deacs trailed by nine at the break.
Shots started falling for both teams coming out of the locker room. Tiana Mangakahia (15pts) knocked down back-to-back threes for the Orange, but Raca was able to answer with her own make from deep. Wake Forest cut the halftime deficit to seven heading into the fourth. Banks helped the Deacs keep momentum on their side, crashing the boards and being on the receiving end for three-point-play opportunities. Syracuse opened the fourth with a 7-2 run and they didn't slow down from there.
The Demon Deacons got within six with five and half to play in the third, but that's as close as they would get. The Orange picked up the pace in the fourth, gaining opportunities in transition and at the foul line to help secure the win.
Up next, the Deacs head to Raleigh for a matchup with ACC rival, NC State. Tipoff is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. on the ACC RSN.
