Patience Helps Deacs Top Elon, 13-7

2/25/2019 10:25:00 PM | Baseball

Wake Forest drew 14 walks, most in a game since 2016, while Jared Shuster struck out 11 on the mound.

ELON, N.C. -- Wake Forest drew 14 walks while conceding just two in a 13-7 win over Elon at Latham Park on Monday night.

The 14 walks were the most since also drawing 14 against Mount St. Mary's in 2016. Shane Muntz tied the program record with five walks in the game.

"Our offensive approach has been much better the last couple days," head coach Tom Walter said. "I'm looking forward to this week so we can get back to hitting on the field some more and getting past this weather...We've basically got six games to get it right before conference play."

Jared Shuster had another strong start on the mound, matching the total from his first start with 11 strikeouts. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk over 5.0 innings.

Five different Demon Deacons (4-4) drew multiple walks. In addition to Muntz's five, Michael Ludowig added three and Bobby Seymour, Patrick Frick and Michael Turconi drew two apiece.

Turconi reached base four total times, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs, while Chris Lanzilli was 2-for-6 with a three-run double.

The game was back-and-forth early on, featuring several lead changes. Elon (5-2) had leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 4-3, but a six-run sixth inning followed by a four-run seventh broke the game open for the Deacs.

The sixth inning alone featured six walks and two HBPs as Wake Forest turned that 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead, and Lanzilli's bases-clearing double in the seventh put the game away.

William Fleming was solid in relief, allowing a run over 3.0 innings with three strikeouts.

The pitching staff finished with 16 strikeouts, as Cole McNamee and Carter Bach each added one in the ninth.

Wake Forest is back in action at home on Wednesday, taking on UNCG at 5 p.m.
