Brandon Childress and Chaundee Brown each tallied 21 points in the win for the Deacs.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- A late comeback led by Brandon Childress and Chaundee Brown lifted Wake Forest over Miami 76-75 on Tuesday night. The Deacs erased a 14-point deficit late in the game and exploded in the final minute to earn the comeback and get the win in front of the home crowd.
Brown recorded his first career double-double with 21 points to go along with a career-high 14 boards and Childress added another 21 points for the Deacs. Freshman Jaylen Hoard also posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. It was the first time in two seasons that multiple Deacons finished with a double-double.
After a strong defensive start where Wake Forest (11-16, 4-11 ACC) forced four turnovers in a six-minute span and took a 17-8 lead, the Deacs struggled to get shots to fall late in the frame. The Canes went 1-of-7 from the field to start the game, but it's offense found some momentum behind five first half threes from Chris Lykes.
Miami (12-15, 4-11 ACC) opened the game 0-5 from behind the arc, but drilled three consecutive triples and followed with an And-1 to tie the game 20-all. The Canes took a 32-25 lead following a 7-0 run heading into the final media timeout of the first half.
Both sides struggled to get baskets in the final minutes of the frame as Wake went 0-6 and Miami went 0-8 with just over a minute on the clock. Hoard capped the first half with a pair of free throws, but Miami took a 35-28 lead into the locker room.
Miami controlled the lead for the first 10 minutes of the second half, taking a 44-31 lead with 17 minutes to play. Brown hit double figure scoring with a three at the 14:46 mark and Childress followed with a fast break layup to bring the Deacs within six.
The Canes answered back to regain the double-digit lead, but Brown and Childress sparked the comeback with a 9-0 run with back-to-back threes to pull within five, 58-53. Miami remained in control with a 10-point advantage following multiple trips to the free throw line down the stretch, but Brown connected from deep and Childress followed with a layup to make it a five-point game with 1:35 to play.
The Demon Deacon defense did not allow a Miami field goal for the last 10 minutes of the game, setting up Childress to play the hero in the final minute of action. The junior guard scored eight straight points for the Deacs with two threes and a layup to put the Deacs on top 76-75 with 25 seconds to play. Defense continued to make timely plays, forcing late turnovers to give Wake Forest the opportunity for the win.
After hitting six threes in the game, Lykes went cold at the buzzer as the Deacons pulled out the thrilling 76-75 victory.
