Wake Forest improves to 5-0 in league play with the road win
RALEIGH, N.C. – The second-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team improved to 19-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in ACC play with a 4-2 victory over No. 30 NC State Wednesday (March 20) afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The Deacs, who are one of two teams in the ACC still undefeated in league play (Miami, 5-0), received an early test from the Wolfpack (11-7, 2-2 ACC) before pulling away with three consecutive wins to clinch the match.
NC State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point. After the top two courts were split, Siddhant Banthia and Julian Zlobinsky fell in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles.
With weather forcing the match indoors to NC State's four indoor courts, Borna Gojo picked up another ranked victory to even the score at 1-all. The 50th-ranked sophomore dominated the second set to defeat No. 18 Alexis Galarneau, 7-5, 6-1.
After NC State picked up a victory at No. 4 singles, Petros Chrysochos and Bar Botzer each earned three-set victories to put the Deacs up 3-2 and one point from clinching.
It came down to a pair of freshmen in Banthia and Melios Efstathiou, the last two player to take the courts for the Deacs, to try and seal the victory. Banthia was the first to finish, picking up a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. Efstathiou, who was leading 7-5, 2-0, saw his match go unfinished.
The Deacs continue their three-match roadtrip on Friday, March 22, at Notre Dame. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
