Wake Forest erased a 2-0 deficit by winning the final five matches
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Trailing 2-0 to No. 11 North Carolina, the No. 3 Wake Forest men's tennis team won the final five matches to secure a 5-2 victory Wednesday (March 27) afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The Demon Deacons (22-3, 8-0 ACC) picked up their second victory over the Tar Heels (12-4, 4-2 ACC) this season, as Wake Forest picked up a 4-2 nonconference victory over North Carolina in the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
It was a slow start for the Deacs, as North Carolina took the doubles point and the opening singles match to build a 2-0 lead. Doubles play went down to the top doubles court after the two teams split matches at No. 2 and 3 doubles. The Tar Heel duo of Boyden and Blumberg, ranked 53rd, took down the No. 61 duo of Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev, 6-4, to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
North Carolina's lead grew to 2-0 as Siddhant Banthia fell at No. 6 singles as the two teams split the opening six sets. No. 3 Petros Chrysochos began the Wake Forest comeback, defeating No. 37 Benjamin Sigouin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Rrezart Cungu also took his match in straight sets at No. 5 singles against No. 109 Josh Peck, 7-5, 6-3, to even the match at 2-all.
Needing to come from a set down, Gojo did just that against No. 26 William Blumberg in the top singles spot. After dropping the opening set, 2-6, the 50th-ranked Gojo forced a third set with a 6-3 victory in the second set. Gojo's momentum carried into the final set in the form of a 6-3 victory, putting the Deacs up 3-2.
Bar Botzer followed Gojo's suit and responded from a first set defeat against No. 110 Brian Cernoch. Botzer, ranked 22nd, dropped the opening set, 4-6, before answering with a 6-4 triumph in the second. The sophomore built a big lead in the deciding set at No. 3 singles before closing out the 6-3 victory to seal the match.
The final match was played to completion, where Melios Efstathiou took a three-set victory over Blaine Boyden at No. 4 singles, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4.
Wake Forest begins its final roadtrip of the regular season on Friday, March 29, at Georgia Tech. First serve is set for 5 p.m. in Atlanta.
