BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's golf team capped a record-setting performance at the Bryan National Collegiate during Sunday's final round on the Bryan Park Champions Course. The Demon Deacons finished the event at 34-under par to post a 32-shot victory, while Jennifer Kupcho and Emilia Migliaccio shared medalist honors at 12-under par.
The Deacs 34-under total set a new ACC 54-hole scoring record, breaking the previous mark of 33-under by Duke at the 2017 Jim West Challenge. It is seventh-lowest 54-hole team score in NCAA women's golf history. It marks the second straight event the Demon Deacons have broken the school 54-hole scoring record, having posted a 23-under total earlier this month to win the Tar Heel Classic at Campo de Casa. The 34-under total also shattered the Bryan National Collegiate scoring record of 13-under set by Alabama two years ago.
Wake Forest shot 14-under during the final round to tie the school 18-hole scoring record, set during the final round of the Tar Heel Classic earlier in the month and matched Friday in the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate. Prior to this month, the program's single-round scoring record was 9-under par, as the Deacs have shot 14-under in three of their last four rounds.
Kupcho and Migliaccio shared the individual title at 12-under par, each shooting a final round 68. It is Kupcho's second consecutive victory and her ninth career title, one shy of the school record 10 career wins by Stephanie Neill (1992-95). It is Migliaccio's second win of the season and her third career title, making her the sixth Demon Deacon in history to win at least three titles (Neill, Kupcho, Brenda Corrie, Laura Philo Diaz, Natalie Sheary). Their scores marked the 10th and 11th times a Deacon finished a tournament 10-under par or better, with the duo combining for nine of those 11 scores (Kupcho – 6, Migliaccio – 3).
Kupcho shot 68-68-68 to extend her school-record streak to six consecutive rounds in the 60s. Sunday's round was her 34th career round in the 60s, tying the NCAA career record of Lauren Stephenson of Alabama. Migliaccio shot 67-69-68 and her streak of four straight rounds in the 60s is tied for the second-longest in program history. Her total of 15 career rounds in the 60s is second in program history, behind Kupcho.
Kupcho and Migliaccio led a dominating performance by Wake Forest at the top of the leaderboard, as the Deacs had all five players finish in the top 10, including the top four. Letizia Bagnoli shot a final round 70 to finish in third place at 5-under, her first career top-10. Siyun Liu had a final round 69 to finish T-4th at 4-under par. Vanessa Knecht also shot 69 on Sunday to finish at 1-under par, T-8th for her first career top-10. The round marked the first time in program history that all five players in the lineup shot under par in the same round and the first time in program history that all five players in the lineup finished a tournament under par.
"We could see them trending in a very positive way all spring," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "The weather has been helpful over the last month to allow us to practice on some things that we needed to tighten up. Add that with young ladies who are already very talented, and have great team chemistry, a lot of birdies were going to come. That is what they did this week and all of them finished in the top 10. They keep pushing each other to get better and records keep falling."
The victory was Wake Forest's second straight at the Bryan National Collegiate and fourth title overall, having also won in 2000, 2011 and 2018. It was the Demon Deacons' second straight win, marking the first time since 2008-09 that the team won consecutive events.
North Carolina was the runner-up at 2-under par, while NC State was third at 2-over par. The 32-shot win is the largest margin of victory in program history, eclipsing a 28-shot win at the 2008 Landfall Tradition.
Kupcho and Migliaccio will be in action next week at the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur, featuring the top 72 amateurs in the world. The Demon Deacons return to action as a team April 18-20 with the ACC Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.
