Sharp adds third-straight double-double; Banks with career-high 13
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team (10-20) fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies (20-10), 85-63, in the first round of the ACC tournament on Wednesday. Alex Sharp secured her third straight double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Demon Deacons. The loss snaps a streak of nine straight seasons the Deacs have won at least one game in Greensboro during ACC tournament competition.
Ivana Raca notched double-digit points for the 22nd time this season with 14 points. Senior Taylor Emery led all players with 26 points for the Hokies. Forward Maya Banks scored a career-high 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting in 24 minutes for the Deacs. Gina Conti added 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
Senior Regan Magarity didn't make Emery do all the work, as the forward put up 22 of her own on 7-for-12 shooting from the field. Trinity Baptiste was the third piece of the puzzle for the Hokies, adding a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Opening the game, it was a back and forth contest between the Demon Deacons and the Hokies, who had a quick turnaround after facing each other just three days prior. Maya Banks, making her 11th start of the season and eighth consecutive, got the Deacs on the board first once again. The sophomore forward has made significant strides the past several weeks, flashing what she's capable of in the low post.
Thanks in part to 13 first quarter points from Emery, Virginia Tech surged on a 20-2 run to close out the opening period with a 17-point lead.
Wake Forest made attempts to respond in the second quarter, but a few inconsistencies on both ends kept them from getting within reach down the stretch before the break. Conti hit a pull-up jumper to end a 10-0 Hokies run. Raca scored eight before the half, but with the long ball falling for Virginia Tech (7-for-12), the Deacs trailed 55-30 at the break.
Baptiste made her move in the third quarter, leading Tech with seven points and eight rebounds. The Demon Deacons appeared to have more control in the fourth. Conti took matters into her own hands, using her knowledge in isolation to give Wake Forest opportunities late.
Nine points off the bench from Alexis Jean, along with impressive shooting down the stretch, helped Virginia Tech seal the victory.
