No. 22 Deacs Top Pitt on Senior Day

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The 22nd-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team capped its regular season on a high note, defeating Pitt, 4-1, Sunday (April 14) afternoon on Senior Day.
Prior to the match, Wake Forest's three seniors, Emma Davis, Anna Ulyashchenko and Joanna Zalewski were honored as part of the Senior Day festivities.
The Demon Deacons (19-7, 9-5 ACC) opened the match with solid doubles play, leading to a 1-0 advantage heading into singles action against the visiting Panthers (4-17, 0-14 ACC). Davis and Chandler Carter took a 6-3 victory on the top doubles court before Mary Caroline Meredith and Eliza Omirou posted a matching 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot to clinch the point moments later.
Pitt evened the score at 1-all after Anna Brylin was forced to retire after the first set of her No. 5 singles match due to injury. The Deacs were unaffected and quickly took three straight-sets wins to clinch the match.
Omirou put the Demon Deacons back in front with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 3, followed by a 6-0, 6-4 win by freshman Peyton Pesavento at the No. 6 position. Fellow freshman Saby Nihalani clinched the match for Wake Forest, defeating Camila Moreno, 6-3, 6-4.
The Deacs finished the season tied for fifth in the ACC standings and earned the No. 6 seed in next week's ACC Tennis Championship. Wake Forest will begin its tournament run on Thursday, April 18, against Wednesday's winner of No. 11 Boston College vs. No. 14 Louisville. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at the Cary Tennis Park.
