Wake Forest Tops App State, 10-6

4/2/2019 9:57:00 PM | Baseball

Bruce Steel, Chris Lanzilli and Bobby Seymour combined for eight hits, two homers and six RBIs.

BOONE, N.C. -- The middle of Wake Forest's lineup did the bulk of the damage in a 10-6 victory over Appalachian State at Smith Stadium on Tuesday night.

No. 2 hitter Bruce Steel went 3-for-6 with a homer and three runs, No. 3 hitter Chris Lanzilli was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, and cleanup hitter Bobby Seymour went 2-for-3 with a homer, two walks and two RBIs. No. 5 hitter Brendan Tinsman also added a two-run homer as the Demon Deacons (16-14) finished with 13 hits.

The Deacs jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a Lanzilli RBI single in the first and Steel's solo blast in the third. The Mountaineers (11-16) battled back with four third-inning runs to take a 4-2 advantage.

Wake Forest scored the next eight runs of the game to pull away for good.

In the fifth, Lanzilli hit an RBI single and Michael Ludowig drove a two-run double into the left-center gap to give the Deacs a 5-4 lead.

Tinsman hit a two-run blast to straightaway center to push the margin to 7-4 in the seventh. In the eighth inning, Lanzilli tallied an RBI double and Seymour followed with a two-run longball over the center-field wall.

Antonio Menendez escaped a trio of jams as he earned the win to improve to 3-1. He entered the game with two runners in scoring position in the third and ended the inning with a strikeout. The next inning, the leadoff batter reached on an error and advanced to third on a stolen base and wild pitch, but Menendez retired the next three hitters to strand him there. App State led off the sixth with a double but Menendez once again sent down three-straight Mountaineers to finish the inning. Over 3.1 innings, Menendez didn't allow a run on a hit and a walk, tallying three strikeouts.

Bobby Hearn tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning. In the eighth, Ben Casstevens celebrated his 23rd birthday by pitching for the first time since 2016 and recorded an out. William Fleming entered and struck out all five batters he faced to pick up his third save.

After eight-straight games on the road, Wake Forest returns home this weekend for a three-game ACC series against Virginia Tech.
