Wake Forest hit seven total home runs, beating Virginia Tech by scores of 8-3 and 8-7.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest mashed seven total home runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of Virginia Tech at David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday, winning by scores of 8-3 and 8-7.
Bruce Steel homered twice in the opener and Bobby Seymour blasted two homers in the nightcap. Chris Lanzilli, DJ Poteet and Brendan Tinsman also went deep to fuel the series win for the Demon Deacons (18-14, 7-7 ACC) over the Hokies (17-14, 4-10 ACC).
The series finale is set for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
Game 1: Wake Forest 8, Virginia Tech 3
After allowing a two-run homer to the third batter of the game, Colin Peluse settled in and didn't allow another run over his as he pitched into the seventh inning of the 8-3 victory. Over 6.2 innings, he allowed a pair of runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts to earn the victory.
The offense got to work at erasing the 2-0 deficit, with Steel homering down the left-field line in the second and Tinsman blasting a long homer in the fourth to even the score at 2-2.
Wake Forest pulled in front with four sixth-inning runs, thanks to a Michael Ludowig RBI double and back-to-back RBI singles from Patrick Frick and Chris Lanzilli as the Deacs took a 6-2 lead.
Homers by Steel and Lanzilli in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, put the game away for good. Shane Muntz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Lanzilli finished the game 4-for-5 while Steel went 3-for-4.
Game 2: Wake Forest 8, Virginia Tech 7
The momentum was on the Hokies' side before Bobby Seymour stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and smashed a three-run homer which turned a 6-4 deficit into a 7-6 lead, which the Deacs held onto for good.
"That was just awesome," head coach Tom Walter said. "Against a tough lefty, Bobby stays in there and fouls a couple fastballs off. He stayed in there on a good breaking ball and got the barrel to it. With their bullpen at the end of the game, runs are hard to come by. It was our first lead in awhile and it came at a good time."
Virginia Tech again jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead with a leadoff homer by Jack Owens and RBI double by Luke Horanski.
Seymour doubled off the top of the wall in left-center to plate Patrick Frick in the first inning. DJ Poteet tied it in the second with an RBI single and Seymour hit his first home run in the third to give the Deacs a short-lived 3-2 lead.
A trio of walks helped the Hokies plate three runs in the fourth to retake a 5-3 advantage. Poteet led off the bottom of the inning with a homer to cut the deficit to 5-4, but Virginia Tech extended it back to 6-4 on an RBI groundout in the fifth.
Hokie starter Nic Enright, after allowing runs in each of the first four innings, retired 10-straight batters after that before a one-out Michael Turconi single in the bottom of the seventh. A flyout gave the Hokies a second out, but Chris Lanzilli singled and forced Virginia Tech to the bullpen after Enright's 118th pitch. Facing lefty reliever Peyton Alford, Seymour deposited a two-out, two-strike pitch over the wall in right field to swing the momentum and give the Deacs a 7-6 lead.
That margin was extended to 8-6 in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a Patrick Frick bases-loaded walk. That insurance run proved to be crucial after Nick Holesa led off the top of the ninth with a solo homer. Owens followed that homer with a double, but William Fleming retired the next three Hokies, including a sliding play up the middle by Turconi, to end the game and record his fourth save.
Ryan Cusick earned the win on the mound, pitching scoreless sixth and seventh innings and striking out three without allowing a hit.
Seymour finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Poteet added two hits and two RBIs, as well.
