WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's golf team was selected to the NCAA Norman Regional as the fields of the four NCAA regionals were announced Wednesday (April 24). The Demon Deacons will be the No. 2 seed in Norman, as action will take place May 6-8 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
The top six teams at each of the four regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships, held May 17-22 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Texas is the top seed in Norman, followed by the Demon Deacons, Florida, Arizona State and host Oklahoma. TCU, Pepperdine, Purdue, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Mississippi State, Virginia Tech, NC State, Texas A&M, UT San Antonio, UNC Wilmington, Sam Houston State and Fairleigh Dickinson round out the 18-team field.
"Everything we have done this season has been building up to this moment," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "We have won our last three tournaments and feel like we are playing our best golf as we head into regionals. We are excited to go Oklahoma. Jennifer Kupcho played the USGA Public Links there a few years ago, so she is familiar with the course. The conditions are likely going to be windy, but we played well in the wind at the Dominican Republic and at the end of the ACC Championship, so I know we are ready for the conditions."
Wake Forest has qualified for and has been selected to the NCAA Regionals every year since the NCAA switched to the regional format in 1993. Out of the Demon Deacons' 26 previous appearances at the NCAA Regionals, Wake has advanced on to the NCAA Championships 15 times, including seven out of the last 13 seasons. Wake Forest won the East Regional in both 1994 and 1995, for its only two regional victories. In both tournaments, the Demon Deacons overcame three-shot deficits on the final day.
The Demon Deacons are coming off a victory at the 2019 ACC Championships, which were held last weekend at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Wake Forest was the tournament's wire-to-wire leader and was led by Emilia Migliaccio and Siyun Liu, who finished first and second on the individual leaderboard.
Last year, Wake Forest sixth at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships. Senior Jennifer Kupcho, the reigning NCAA Champion, has been medalist at an NCAA Regional the last two seasons, winning the 2017 Athens Regional and the 2018 Tallahassee Regional.
