Johanna Schulz leads the way with 800m win; Lynch records multiple top-three finishes

LYNCHBURG, VA – Wake Forest track & field got a taste of midweek action, competing at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier on Wednesday at Liberty University.

The Demon Deacons showed up and stepped up to the plate. The Deacs headed back to the bus at the conclusion having won three event titles along with a handful of solid performances.

Johanna Schulz, a 2019 indoor first team All-ACC selection, took care of business in the women's 800m with a finishing time 2:06.24. Her winning time is enough for a new career-best and second all-time in outdoor Wake Forest history. It's also good for the fastest women's outdoor 800m time since Dina Nosenko in 2010 (2:07.68). Sophomore Kaitlin Derry earned the top spot in the women's 1500m at 4:39.27. The win marks Derry's first collegiate victory and her second-straight top-five finish in the event.

On the men's side, freshman Archie Wallis continued to build momentum as the outdoor regular season came to a close. He earned his first-career event title, crossing first and setting a new personal best in the 800m with a mark of 1:50.24. Ethan Roach came through with personal best in the men's 100m dash.

In the field, Janese Lynch continued to flex on the competition. The sophomore has been as consistent as you could ask for, securing two top-three finishes for the Demon Deacons in Lynchburg. First, in the discus throw, she elevated her approach and set a personal best of 45.43m. Displaying her versatility, Lynch took home a second-place finish in the shot put at 14.70m.

Tesia Kempski continued her streak of strong performances with a third-place finish in the women's pole vault. Her final successful height of 4.05m marks the sixth time she's came away with a top-three finish for the Deacs during the outdoor season (three wins).

Up next, Wake Forest will prepare for the 2019 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Charlottesville, Va. The meet will feature three hours of live action on the event's first night (Thursday, May 9), followed by three hours of coverage on Friday and Saturday evenings. Reprising their roles from February's Indoor Championships, Shawn Kenney returns to handle play-by-play, while former U.S. Olympic standout Dan O'Brien will serve as analyst. The pair will be joined by distance race analyst David Mitchell and Newman as sideline reporter.

ACC Network Extra will bring live action Thursday from 6 until 9 p.m. Friday's live coverage will air from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., followed by Saturday's finals from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
