HALVORSEN SEEKS TITLE IN 5K AND 10K
• The 2018 second team outdoor All-America selection (10k) enters the 2019 conference championships ranked fifth in the women's 5k at 16:06.17 (2019 Virginia Challenge). She'll also make her '19 debut in the women's 10k, which she holds the fourth-best outdoor time in school history at 33:52.69.
SUCCESS IN THE FIELD
• The Deacs have seen great success in the field this outdoor season.
• Tesia Kempski set a personal record of 4.12m (13-6.25) in the women's pole vault at the Virginia Challenge. That mark is good for third-best in Wake Forest History.
• The Harrisburg, Penn. native competed in six outdoor meets for the Deacs in 2019, finishing with three victories and a season-low third-place finish at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier. She ranks seventh in the ACC in the event.
SCHULZ, KONOPELSKI AND LYNCH MAKE CASE FOR TEAM MVP'S
• In their first year with the Deacs as graduate student-athletes, Johanna Schulz and Danielle Konopelski have impressed immediately out the gate. Both find themselves in position to earn podium status in Charlottesville. Schulz, a 2018 indoor first team All-ACC selection, recently jumped up the Wake Forest leaderboard with a second-best time in history of 2:06.24 in the women's 800m. She won the 800m at the Liberty qualifier with the historic finish and earned two other top-10 finishes during the outdoor season.
• Konopelski, a graduate transfer from Queens University of Charlotte, found her rhythm immediately with the Deacs. In her first appearance, at the High Point Vertklasse, she took third-place with a distance of 47.77m in the women's javelin. The mark is good for second-best in school history. She finished in the top-five (4) at both the Raleigh Relays and Virginia Challenge.
• Lynch has been a steady force for Wake Forest all year long. Her shot put distance of 15.80m shattered her previous career-best and launched her up the Demon Deacons rankings to second all-time behind Lindsay Neuberger (2007). She competed in five meets in the outdoor season, winning the shot put at the Charlotte Invitational (Apr. 12-13) and taking third in the discus throw at the Liberty Qualifier with a career-best of 45.43m. She enters the outdoor championships ranked sixth in the shot put and 17th in the discus.
FRESHMAN SPOTLIGHT
• Zach Facioni has immediately solidified himself among Wake Forest elite during his inaugural season. The Sydney, Australia native set a new school record in the men's outdoor 5k at the 2019 Raleigh Relays. His finishing time of 13:48.16 broke a 38 year-old record set by David Crowe in 1981. Facioni enters the conference championships ranked No. 1 in the 5k and ninth in the east region.
• Nine of Wake Forest's 23 competitors this week are competing as freshmen.
UP NEXT
• Pending the outcome of this weekend's competition, the 2019 NCAA East Region Preliminary round will be held May 23-25 in Jacksonville, Florida.
