Wright, Jones and Kempski earn All-ACC honors; Wallis qualifies for 800m final
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Elise Wright, Tony Jones and Tesia Kempski earned All-ACC honors on the second day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.
Wright led the way with an outstanding performance in the women's 3k steeplechase. She finished third and earned first team All-ACC honors with a time of 10:23.91. The freshman distance runner solidified her spot at the east region preliminaries in two weeks and she can't wait for the opportunity. Joining her in Jacksonville, Hannah Brookover also competed in the women's 3k steeple alongside and finished 11th
"I'm so excited to go to Jacksonville in two weeks," Wright said. "I have the best teammates to train with, I have the best coaches to train under and it's been a terrific freshman year."
Jones earned Second Team All-ACC honors in the men's high jump. He cleared 2.08m to match his career-best and he'll look to continue his string of solid performances at the regional round.
Kempski takes home second team honors in the women's pole vault with a sixth-place finish. The senior leader earned the ACC honors for the first time in her collegiate career.
On the track, Archie Wallis stepped up to the plate and showed explosiveness down the stretch in the men's 800m prelims. He finished third in his heat and earned a spot in the event final tomorrow afternoon.
The final day of competition at the ACC Championships begins Saturday at 12:05pm. All events were pushed up four hours due to potential inclement weather later in the day in Charlottesville. Freshmen Zach Facioni and Aaron Las Heras will run for the men in the 5k. Sam Halvorsen and Mimi Smith are up once again, this time in the women's 5k.
