Facioni gets nod for First Team All-ACC in men’s 5k; Hicks sets record in discus
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Wake Forest track & field team wrapped up the final day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Championships on Saturday. The women finished the meet with 29.5 points (12th) and the men collected 15 points (15th). Zach Facioni, Archie Wallis, Alva Hicks and Johanna Schulz earned All-ACC honors for the Demon Deacons. The Deacs finished the Outdoor Championships with nine All-ACC selections (two first team and six second team).
Facioni participated in the 5k, battling down the stretch with Syracuse for the pole position. The Sydney, Australia native earned first team All-ACC honors with a second-place finish. Coming into the meet, the freshman ranked No. 1 in the ACC in the 5k and can now turn his attention to the east region prelims in two weeks. Fellow freshman Aaron Las Heras competed in the 5k and earned a 12th-place finish for Wake Forest.
In the men's 800m final, Wallis delivered with another impressive performance. He finished fifth to take home second team All-ACC honors for the Deacs.
On the women's side, Johanna Schulz got her shot at a conference championship in the 1500m. She set a personal-best of 4:20.28 and earned second team All-ACC honors with a fourth-place finish.
In the Field, Alva Hicks knew she had to make something happen when she stepped into the circle for the women's discus. The senior advanced to the final flight of the event and broke a Wake Forest record with a distance of 49.80m. She finished sixth and earned second team All-ACC honors. Hicks also owns the outdoor school record in the hammer throw.
Up next, the Demon Deacons will send a select number of student-athletes to compete at the East Region Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla. The meet will take place May 23-25 at the University of North Florida.
