WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Thirteen members of the Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Round May 23-25. The meet will be hosted by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida.
All individual events, excluding the heptathlon and decathlon, will have 48 competitors. The top 12 from every event will move on to the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Austin, Texas held June 5-8.
Zach Facioni, Archie Wallis, Elijah Shalaway, Elise Wright, Hannah Brookover, Sam Halvorsen, Mimi Smith, Johanna Schulz, Alva Hicks, Janese Lynch, Tesia Kempski, Rachel Kern and Danielle Konopelski will represent the Demon Deacons at the three-day meet.
Facioni is entered in the men's 5000m, which will be run Saturday at 8:45 p.m. Facioni took home first team All-ACC honors with a second-place finish in the 5k at the recent ACC Outdoor Championships. The freshman currently holds the Wake Forest record in the outdoor 5k at 13:48.16.
Wright and Brookover will compete in the women's 3k steeplechase, set for Friday at 8:20 p.m. Wright earned first team All-ACC honors in the event at the ACC Outdoor Championships after finishing third in the event while Brookover still holds second place on the Wake Forest all-time performance list in the event.
Also on the track for the women, Smith gets double-duty, running in the 5000m and 10000m for the Deacs. Halvorsen will compete in the 10000m while Schulz gets a crack at a national qualifying mark in the 1500m. Halvorsen, a 2018 outdoor second team NCAA All-American in the 10k, currently holds the second-best time in school history in the event. Last year in the preliminary round, Halvorsen ran a then personal-best 34:10.85 in the 10000m run to finish seventh in a field of 48 runners. Schulz, a graduate student-athlete in her first season with the Deacons, earned first team indoor All-ACC honors (mile) and second team outdoors (1500m).
In the field, Kern and Konopelski will square off in the women's javelin. Kern, a 2018 first team All-ACC selection in the event, finished 30th at the regional meet a season ago. A graduate transfer from Queens (Charlotte), Konopelski now ranks third all-time in school history in the event after a solid outdoor campaign for the Demon Deacons.
Hicks and Lynch will get their shot at earning trips to nationals. Hicks, holding school records in the weight and discus throw, will enter the circle in the women's discus while Lynch looks to fight off the competition in the shot put. Hicks' mark of 49.80 at the ACC Outdoor Championships was good enough for the discus record and a second team All-ACC nod. Both will make their NCAA regional meet debut this weekend in Jacksonville.
Kempski is entered in the pole vault competition, set for Friday at 5:00 p.m. Kempski finished sixth at the ACC Championships and enters the prelim competition ranked No. 22. The senior from Harrisburg, Pa. impressed in her final season with the Deacs, winning three pole vault titles and earning All-ACC honors for the first time in her career.
On the men's side, Elijah Shalaway is the lone participant in the field for Wake Forest. The junior leader looks to extend his season with a national qualifying distance and bring home some hardware for the Deacs. In 2018, he threw 62.14m (203-10) on his final attempt, putting him 16th overall, just shy of qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Fans can watch a live stream of preliminary action with a FloTrack Pro subscription all three days of competition. The subscription will include access to all FloTrack live broadcasts, video on-demand from all events, documentaries, technique videos and more.
