The Demon Deacons left the bases loaded three times in the series-opening loss.
CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemson edged Wake Forest by a 4-3 score in the series-opener at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Thursday night.
The Demon Deacons (29-23, 13-15 ACC) left the bases loaded in the first, sixth and seventh innings as the Tigers (32-22, 14-14 ACC) avoided the big blow in each of those innings.
Bobby Seymour finished the day 2-for-5 with three RBIs. He now has 85 RBIs this season, second-most in program history. Patrick Frick and Chris Lanzilli added two hits apiece.
In the first inning, Jake Mueller walked and Lanzilli doubled to put two on with one out. Clemson got out of it with a strikeout, walk and groundout.
Grayson Byrd and Bryar Hawkins each hit solo homers in the first two innings to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Clemson added two more in the fifth on two walks, a single and error, sacrifice fly and squeeze bunt to push its lead to 4-0.
Seymour hit an RBI double in the sixth to get the Deacs on the board, but after a Shane Muntz walk loaded the bases, Clemson escaped with a strikeout and fielder's choice.
Wake Forest mounted a two-out rally in the seventh with an error, then three-straight singles from Frick, Lanzilli and Seymour to bring in two runs. Seymour stole second and Muntz walked again to load the bases, but another strikeout for Clemson ended the threat.
Bruce Steel led off the eighth with a double, but the next three Deacs were retired.
Mat Clark earned the win for Clemson, allowing three unearned runs over 6.2 innings with nine strikeouts. Carson Spiers earned a 2.1-inning save, striking out two without allowing a run.
Colin Peluse took the loss, conceding four runs (three earned) over 6.0 innings. He struck out six, allowing four hits and five walks. Tyler Witt (1.1 innings) and Antonio Menendez (0.2) threw scoreless outings in relief.
Game two of the series is set for Friday at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
