JOHNSON, Ark. – The Wake Forest women's golf team opened play Friday at the NCAA Championships with the first round at the Blessings Golf Course. The Demon Deacons shot 17-over during the opening round and are in seventh place among the 24-team field.

The par-73 Blessings Course proved to be a challenge for the nation's top teams as Texas and host Arkansas shot 10-over to hold the first-round lead. Stanford and Arizona are tied for third place at 12-over, while Duke (13-over), USC (14-over), Wake Forest (17-over) and Arizona State (18-over) round out the top eight. The top eight teams after Monday's fourth round of stroke play will advance to match play to determine the national champion.

Letizia Bagnoli posted the best round of the day for the Deacs, shooting a 1-over 74, T-5th on the individual leaderboard. She had a fast start, playing the front nine in 3-under, before falling back to 1-over at the end of the round. Bagnoli led the team with four birdies on her round, one less than the rest of the lineup combined.

Jennifer Kupcho and Vanessa Knecht each posted a 5-over 78, while Siyun Liu had a first round 79 to round out the scoring four for the Demon Deacons. Emilia Migliaccio shot a first round 85 to complete the Wake Forest lineup.

The NCAA Championships continue Saturday with the second round at the Blessings Golf Course. The Deacs will tee off in the first groups, beginning at 7:00 a.m. CT.
