ORLANDO, Fla.– Wake Forest women's tennis senior and captain Emma Davis was awarded the ITA National Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award, the organization announced Sunday evening.
The ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship goes to a Division I women's player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. It dates back to 1997 and is in memory of the late and widely admired Penn women's tennis coach Cissie Leary.
"What an incredible honor for Emma who has been such an amazing teammate, player, student and competitor for the past four years," head coach Jeff Wyshner said. "I've never been part of a national award winner in 25 years as a head coach, and Emma certainly is an incredibly deserving first in my career. I couldn't be more proud to have a student-athlete like Emma who personifies everything that Wake, college athletics and our tennis program are meant to be."
Davis helped lead the Deacons to four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, after Wake did not qualify for the Tournament since 2009. The Cohassett, Mass., native wrote herself into the Wake Forest history books, notching 191 career singles and doubles victories, sixth all-time in Wake history.
This season, Davis was ranked as high as 16th nationally and finished the regular season 34th. She recorded a 23-14 overall record with a 16-9 mark in dual match play, all at the top spot. In doubles, Davis and partner Chandler Carter went 16-11 in dual contests.
Davis will wrap her Wake Forest career with her second consecutive trip to the NCAA Individual championships May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. She will face Clarissa Hand of Northwestern in the first round on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
