JOHNSON, Ark. – The Wake Forest women's golf team advanced to the final of the NCAA Championship with a 4-0-1 semifinal win over Auburn on Tuesday morning at the Blessings Golf Club. The Demon Deacons will play Duke in the championship match on Wednesday afternoon.
The championship match will begin at 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET) and air live on Golf Channel.
The Demon Deacons got wins from Jennifer Kupcho, Emilia Migliaccio and Letizia Bagnoli to clinch their semifinal victory. Vanessa Knecht, who was leading at the time the Deacs clinched, also earned a win, while Siyun Liu had her match end in a tie.
"They all went out and played very well this morning," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "It is a lot of golf, to play two matches today. They are competitors and they love being in this moment. They came out strong and got us through to the final and now we have to prepare for this last match. Jennifer and Emilia played phenomenal today and it was great to Leti to come back and clinch the win."
The Demon Deacons took a quick early 2-0 lead with a pair of dominating victories by their first-team All-Americans. Kupcho was in the first match off the tees and posted the first point for the Deacs, downing Kaleigh Telfer 6&4. Migliaccio followed that with a 7&5 win over Brooke Sansom, the largest margin of victory in the five-year history of match play at the NCAA Championship.
Bagnoli sealed the Deacons' win with her 1UP victory over Elena Hualde. She was 2-Down with four holes to play before winning No. 6 and No. 7 with birdies to draw even with two holes to play. After tying No. 8, Bagnoli won the final hole with a par to win her match and clinch the Deacs' victory.
Vanessa Knecht, who led 3UP when the match was clinched earned a 3&2 win over Mychael O'Berry, while Siyun Liu was all square when play was stopped and earned a draw.
Wake Forest will be looking for its first NCAA Championship in women's golf. The Deacs' previous best performance was a third place finish in 1995.
