JOHNSON, Ark. – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play Friday at the 2019 NCAA Championship with the first round at the Blessings Golf Club. The Demon Deacons shot 8-over to finish the day tied for fifth place.

Top-ranked Oklahoma State is the 18-hole leader at 2-over, followed by Stanford at 3-over. Cal and Auburn are tied for third place at 4-over, followed by Wake Forest and Texas A&M tied for fifth place at 8-over. Ohio State is in seventh place at 9-over and Texas rounds out the top eight at 10-over.

"This course is very difficult and the winds were up today, at times 20 miles per hour," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The hole locations were tough and I saw some really good players putt balls off greens. That combination will give you a leaderboard where everyone is over par. In this type of tournament, you just have to survive. You have to keep hitting good shots and know that if you hit enough, you will get rewarded. We aren't in bad shape at 8-over, still in the top five. We played alright, but we have to be ready for an early morning tomorrow."

Lee Detmer was the low Deac of round one, shooting an even par round of 72 to end the day T-12th on the individual leaderboard. He finished strong, making two birdies in his last five holes to get back to even par for the day.

Eugenio Chacarra posted a 2-over 74 and Cameron Young and Alex Fitzpatrick each shot a 3-over 75 to round out the scoring four for the Demon Deacons. Eric Bae shot 81 to complete the Wake Forest lineup.

Round two of the NCAA Championships are Saturday at the Blessings Golf Club. The Demon Deacons will tee off in the first pairings of the day, beginning at 6:50 a.m. CT.
