JOHNSON, Ark. – The Wake Forest men's golf team continued play Saturday at the 2019 NCAA Championship with the second round at the Blessings Golf Club. The Demon Deacons shot 9-over to finish the day at 17-over, tied for seventh place.
Top-ranked Oklahoma State is the only team under par through 36 holes, holding the lead at 10-under. Stanford is second at 2-over and Texas A&M is third at 7-over. Auburn is fourth at 10-over, Texas is fifth at 12-over, Oklahoma is sixth at 16-over and Wake Forest is tied for seventh with Cal and Ohio State at 17-over.
"It was like yesterday where we had a bad stretch of holes that cost us," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We played No. 12, 13 or 16 very poorly and we need to make adjustments on those holes. At the end of the day, we are still in the top eight, just a little closer to that top 15 cut line. This course is hard and it will fight you all day long. You have to keep playing and not moan and groan about a bad break. We need to do better with that because we are good enough to play with these teams."
Alex Fitzpatrick led the Demon Deacons during the second round, shooting a 1-over 73. Seniors Lee Detmer and Cameron Young each shot a 2-over 74, while Eugenio Chacarra had a second round 76 to round out the scoring four. Eric Bae completed the Wake Forest by carding a round of 77.
Round three of the NCAA Championships is Sunday at the Blessings Golf Club. Following the third round, the top 15 teams will make the cut for the final round of stroke play on Monday. The top eight teams after Monday's final round will advance to the match play portion of the championship, beginning with the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The Demon Deacons will tee off in the third round on Sunday morning, beginning at 7:45 a.m. CT.
