JOHNSON, Ark. – The Wake Forest men's golf team climbed the leaderboard during the third round of the NCAA Championships on Sunday at the Blessings Golf Club. The Demon Deacons shot an even par round to finish the day at 17-over, moving up two places to fifth place.

Top-ranked Oklahoma State continues to be the only team under par at the tournament, finishing the day at 12-under. Texas and Stanford are tied for second at 13-over, followed by Oklahoma at 16-over and the Deacs at 17-over. Vanderbilt is in sixth place at 18-over, followed by Texas A&M at 20-over and Clemson rounding out the top eight at 28-over.

Following Sunday's third round, the field was cut in half from 30 teams to 15 teams to play the final round of stroke play. The top eight teams after Monday's final round will advance to the match play portion of the championship, beginning with the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Senior Lee Detmer continues to lead the Demon Deacons at the event, shooting a 1-under 71 on Sunday to finish the day at 1-over par. He was 2-over through eight holes before finishing his round bogey-free, making three birdies to finish in red figures for the day. Detmer is T-11th on the individual leaderboard through 54 holes.

Freshman Eugenio Chacarra also shot under par on Sunday, carding a 1-under 71 to finish the day at 5-over. He used a hot start, shooting 3-under through the first seven holes, to open his low round of the week.

Fellow freshman Alex Fitzpatrick rallied from a tough start to finish with an even par 72. After a triple-bogey at the first hole, he was 3-over when he made the turn. Fitzpatrick made four birdies on the back nine as he shot 3-under to get back level for the day. He is at 4-over for the tournament.

Eric Bae rounded out the scoring four for the Deacs with a 2-over 74, his low round of the week. Cameron Young was the fifth player in the lineup, shooting an 81.

"Our young guys really stepped up today for us," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The freshmen, Eugenio and Alex, combined to shoot 1-under, which was big. Lee continues to play well and will be near the top 10 when the day is over. This was a total team effort today and we just kept fighting. Our four scorers were 4-under on the back nine, which is really good on a course this tough. We put ourselves in good position, but the fight isn't over yet. We need another good round tomorrow."

The final round of stroke play of the NCAA Championships is Monday at the Blessings Golf Club. The Demon Deacons will tee off beginning at 11:22 a.m. CT. Golf Channel will have live coverage of Monday's play from 4-8 p.m. ET.
