JOHNSON, Ark. – The Wake Forest men's golf team climbed to third place on the final day of stroke play at the NCAA Championship. The Demon Deacons shot 3-over during Monday's round at the Blessings Golf Club to finish at 20-over and earn the No. 3 seed for the match play portion of the tournament.

Wake Forest will play No. 6 seed Stanford in Tuesday's quarterfinal round. The Demon Deacons are making their first appearance in the NCAA match play bracket since the format began in 2009.

The Demon Deacons opened the final day of stroke play in fifth place and moved up to third by shooting the third-lowest round of the day. For the second straight day, Wake Forest used a strong back nine, playing the final half of the course in 2-under par.

"I am extremely proud of this team," said head coach Jerry Haas. "This course is very demanding, but as I explained to the guys, if you want to win a championship, it is going to be hard. The last two days we have played some really fine golf and were very steady. We have a deep team and they feed off each other, making everyone better."

Senior Lee Detmer shot the Deacs' low round of the week on Monday with a final round 3-under 69. After making the turn at even par, he played the back nine in 3-under, highlighted by holing out for eagle from the fairway at No. 11.

Detmer finished the tournament at 2-under to earn his first career collegiate top-five, finishing T-4th in his final event as a Demon Deacon. He is the first Wake Forest player to finish in the top five at the NCAA Championships since Kyle Reifers was runner-up in 2006.

It marked the first time this season that Detmer was Wake Forest's low player in a tournament. He is the eighth different player to be the low Deac in the lineup in 2018-19.

"It is a great to have this finish in my final collegiate event," said Detmer. "I had a great round today and the eagle on 11 was just a bonus. This has been a long time coming and I put in a lot of hard work. I felt like I could compete at this level and I am really happy to show it this week."

Freshman Alex Fitzpatrick shot even par 72 in his final round to finish his first NCAA Championship at 4-over. His T-15th finish was the highest finish by a Wake Forest freshman at the NCAA Championships since Len Mattiace was T-14th in 1986.

Cameron Young had a final round 74 and Eugenio Chacarra shot a final round 76 to complete the scoring four for the Demon Deacons. Eric Bae rounded out the lineup with a final round 77.

The match play quarterfinals will be played Tuesday morning at the Blessings Golf Club. The other matches are No. 1 seed Oklahoma State vs. No. 8 seed SMU, No. 4 seed Oklahoma vs. No. 5 seed Texas, and No. 2 seed Vanderbilt vs. No. 7 seed Texas A&M. The quarterfinal winners will advance to Tuesday afternoon's semifinals.

The Deacs and Cardinal will tee off beginning at 7:00 a.m. CT. Golf Channel will have live coverage of the quarterfinal matches from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. ET, and live coverage of the semifinal matches from 4-8 p.m. ET.
