Deacs’ Run Comes to an End in NCAA Second Round

ATHENS, GA. - No. 22 Wake Forest women's tennis' season came to an end as the Deacons fell 4-0 to No. 2 overall and top-seeded Georgia in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Demon Deacons made their second consecutive trip to the second round after defeating Arizona State 4-2 in Athens last year, but Georgia knocked Wake out of the 2018 tournament with a 4-0 sweep.

Wake (21-9) battled for the early doubles point, but came up short as the Bulldogs pulled through with back-to-back 6-4 victories and courts one and two. No. 34 Emma Davis and partner Chandler Carter knotted the match at 4-4 before the Georgia duo of No. 28 Katarina Jokic and Lourdes Carle won the next two sets to win the match on court one. After trailing early, Anna Ulyashchenko and Lexi Franco won four straight set to take a 5-3 lead on court three before the match was abandoned.

In singles action, Georgia (25-1) picked up four first set wins, but Wake freshman Saby Nihalani came out firing picking up a 6-0 first set victory on court four against No. 72 Vivian Wolff. Carter followed battling to a 6-4 decision in the fifth spot. Georgia rallied to win the second sets on both of those courts and the matches were abandoned as the Dawgs clinched the match before Wake had a chance to get on the board.

Georgia put their second point up as 69th ranked Lourdes Carle defeated Eliza Omirou 6-1, 6-3 on court three. Moments later, No. 19 Marta Gonzalez of Georgia topped Ulyashchenko 6-3, 7-5 in the second spot to extend its lead to 3-0.

Freshman Peyton Pesavento dropped the first set 6-3, but rallied to tie the second frame at 5-5. Unfortunately, No. 122 Meg Kowalski took the final two games to clinch the victory on six for the Bulldogs. Davis was tied at 5-5 in the second set against No. 2 Katarina Jokic before the match was clinched.

Davis finishes her Wake Forest career with 105 singles victories, eighth all-time in Wake Forest women's tennis history. The senior class of Davis, Ulyashchenko and Joanna Zalewki picked up 78 team wins in their four years with the Deacons, the second highest in Wake Forest history and the most since 2002.
