BORAS, Sweden- Rising sophomore Aaron Las Heras won gold in the 5000m at the European Athletics U20 Championships on Sunday (July 21) with a personal best time of 14:02.76.
Las Heras's previous personal best in the 5000m was 14:14.99. The Barcelona native clocked a 2:36 in the final 1000m of the race to finish 12 seconds under his personal mark.
"That was a great race for Aaron," Wake Forest head coach John Hayes said. "He is currently preparing for the cross-country season so there were no race specific workouts. He told me the day before that he hoped for around a fifth place but he obviously surprised himself. He represented Spain and Wake Forest very well and we are excited for his future."
