PINEHURST, N.C. – Four members of the Wake Forest men's golf team will be in action next week at the U.S. Amateur Championship, held August 12-18 at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club. Rising sophomore Alex Fitzpatrick, rising junior Parker Gillam, rising redshirt senior Kyle Sterbinsky and recent graduate Cameron Young are among the 312 players in the field, who will play this week on Pinehurst's No. 2 and No. 4 courses.
The tournament will consist of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday. The top 64 players will advance to match play, which begins Wednesday and concludes with Sunday's final. Television coverage of match play will be on Fox and Fox Sports 1, starting Wednesday.
"The U.S. Amateur is a tremendous opportunity for our players to compete against the best amateurs in the world," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The year's event is special, not only because we have four players in the field, but because it is being held nearby in Pinehurst. Hopefully a lot of Deacon fans can make the trip this week to support them."
Fitzpatrick received an exemption into the field by being in the top 50 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings (No. 37). An honorable mention All-American during his freshman season with the Deacs in 2018-19, he advanced to the quarterfinals of last year's event in Pebble Beach in his U.S. Amateur debut. In 2013, he was on the bag as his older brother Matthew, now a PGA Tour player, won the U.S. Amateur.
Gillam is making his U.S. Amateur debut this year after advancing from qualifying. He was an alternate for the field after finishing T-4th at the qualifying event in Bluffton, S.C., but later gained entry into the event.
Sterbinsky is making his second appearance at the U.S. Amateur after winning the qualifying event in Blue Bell, Pa., by two strokes. He also competed at the 2016 U.S. Amateur, but did not advance from stroke play.
Young is making his sixth appearance at the U.S. Amateur after receiving an exemption for being in the top 50 of the WAGR (No. 44) and for qualifying for this year's U.S. Open. The 2019 second-team All-American for the Deacs has advanced to match play in four of his five previous U.S. Amateur appearances, highlighted by a quarterfinal appearance in 2014.
