WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum during the 2019-20 season. The announcement of the celebration came on Wednesday (Aug. 28), the 30th anniversary of the building's dedication on Aug. 28, 1989.
Throughout the season there will be special events, promotions and giveaways to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Coliseum. Fans will be able to relive the building's rich history during each visit to a Wake Forest basketball game this season, as well as special events throughout the year.
"We are excited to be celebrating the storied history of the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum," said Director of Athletics John Currie. "The Coliseum has not only been a beloved home for Wake Forest basketball, but it has also been a big part of this community for decades. It has hosted some of the biggest names in music, seen some of the greatest moments in Wake Forest basketball, witnessed thousands of students receive their diplomas, and served as a meeting place for countless organizations. We are proud to be a part of the Coliseum's past, and as we look to the future, we are committed to continuing to make it a venue that will afford our fans with The Best Fan Experience in North Carolina and provide Value to the University, Winston-Salem and Triad Communities."
Since the LJVM Coliseum opened its doors 30 years ago today, the building has been home to Wake Forest basketball with over five million fans watching the Demon Deacons. In addition to the Deacs, the Coliseum hosted NCAA Tournament first/second rounds in 1993, 1997, 2000 and 2007, hosted the MEAC and CIAA basketball championships and hosted the 2007 Davis Cup quarterfinal between the United States and Spain. The building has also annually hosts the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic, featuring area high schools.
The LJVM Coliseum has hosted premier entertainers throughout the years including Elton John and set the scene for movies including The Longest Ride. In recent years, Thomas Rhett, The Chainsmokers, Miranda Lambert, Old Dominion and many others have performed, among other family shows including an annual performance from the iconic Harlem Globetrotters. Every spring, the building is the site of numerous Winston-Salem/Forsyth County high school graduations.
The facility is named after Lawrence Joel, the only Winston-Salem native awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Also honored are nearly 500 Forsyth County veterans who gave their lives for their country in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada and the Persian Gulf.
