CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wake Forest women's golf team opened the 2019-20 season with a second place finish at the Cougar Classic. The Demon Deacons shot 26-under over the three rounds at Yeamans Hall Club, the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history.
The Demon Deacons finished one stroke behind Vanderbilt, who won the title at 27-under. Florida was third at 24-under and Arkansas was fourth at 9-under.
"It was nice to come off a strong season last year and not miss a beat to start this year," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "These young ladies showed a lot of heart this week and it's enjoyable to watch them compete. I am looking forward to seeing what is next for this group."
The 26-under score was the second-lowest in program history, trailing only the ACC record 34-under the Deacs shot last year to win the Bryan National Collegiate. The four lowest 54-hole scores in Wake Forest history have all come in the last two seasons.
Three Demon Deacons posted top-10 finishes to lead the team to the runner-up finish. Emilia Migliaccio finished third at 8-under after a final round 70. Vanessa Knecht shot a career-best 67 on Tuesday to finish T-4th at 6-under, her first career top-five finish. Freshman Lauren Walsh concluded her collegiate debut T-7th at 5-under after a final round 69.
Siyun Liu shot even par 72 on Tuesday to finish T-12th at 3-under and Letizia Bagnoli rounded out the lineup at 6-over.
The Demon Deacons will return to action next week with their inaugural appearance at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Minnesota.
