LAKE ELMO, Minn. – The Wake Forest women's golf team had a strong first day of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, shooting 6-under during the opening round at the Royal Golf Club to hold the 18-hole lead at the elite event. It is the Demon Deacons' first appearance at the tournament which annually features one of the strongest fields of the fall.
In a field that includes seven of the top 14 teams in the nation, including the top three, the ninth-ranked Demon Deacons were one of just four teams to shoot under par on Monday. Wake Forest has a one-shot lead over Arkansas (5-under), while Arizona (3-under) is third and South Carolina (2-under) is fourth.
Freshman Rachel Kuehn, playing her first collegiate event, shot a bogey-free 5-under 67 in her first round as a Demon Deacon to hold the individual lead. It was the lowest round ever by a Wake Forest player in her first collegiate round and was one shot off the Wake Forest freshman single-round record of 66 set by Jennifer Kupcho in 2015-16 and matched by Emilia Migliaccio in 2017-18.
"We had a terrific first day on a very challenging golf course," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "Rachel had an exceptional first collegiate round and finished really strong, shooting 4-under on the back nine. There are still two more rounds to play, but we put ourselves in a good position on the opening day."
Siyun Liu also shot in red figures on Monday, posting a 1-under 71 to end the day T-10th. Migliaccio is T-15th at even par, as is Lauren Walsh, who was 5-over through eight holes before five birdies over her last 10 holes got her back to even par. Vanessa Knecht rounded out the lineup with a first round 76.
The ANNIKA Intercollegiate continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at the Royal Golf Club in suburban Saint Paul.
