Deacs Dominate in ANNIKA Intercollegiate Victory

LAKE ELMO, Minn. – The Wake Forest women's golf team completed a wire-to-wire victory at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate with a dominant final round performance Wednesday at the Royal Golf Club. The Demon Deacons shot 5-under during the third round to finish at 17-under and post a 14-shot victory against one of the strongest fields of the fall.

In a field that included seven of the top 14 teams in the nation, including the top three, the ninth-ranked Demon Deacons were the only team to shoot under par in all three rounds. Arkansas finished as runner-up at 3-under, while Texas (2-under) was the only other team to finish the tournament under par.

Leading the Deacs was freshman Rachel Kuehn, who became the first player in program history to win an individual title in her collegiate debut. She shot a final round 3-under 69 to finish the tournament at 13-under and post a five-shot win in an event that featured 12 returning All-Americans from 2019. Her 13-under total is a Wake Forest freshman record and the third-best 54-hole total in school history, trailing only the school-record 15-under score that Jennifer Kupcho shot twice (once as a sophomore, once as a junior).

Kuehn's win makes her the 19th all-time Demon Deacon to win an individual title. She and her mother, All-American and Wake Forest Hall of Famer Brenda Corrie Kuehn ('86), become the first Wake Forest mother-daughter duo to each have earned medalist honors at a collegiate event.

"This victory was an unbelievable finish with such a strong field," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "The conditions were tough and these young ladies played outstanding. It's an incredible feeling as a coach to know that every one of your players is capable of winning an individual title, and they can come together as a unit to win as a team. This is a special group."

Joining Kuehn in the top six of the individual leaderboard were two other Demon Deacons. Senior Siyun Liu shot a final round 71 to finish in fifth at 4-under. Freshman Lauren Walsh had her second top-10 in as many events, finishing T-6th at 3-under after a final round 70. Only 13 players in the field finished the tournament under par, with Wake Forest having three of them.

Emilia Migliaccio shot 73 on Wednesday to finish T-19th at 3-over, while Vanessa Knecht rounded out the lineup, finishing the tournament at 18-over.

Wake Forest's 17-under total was the fourth-lowest 54-hole team score in program history as the five lowest scores in Demon Deacon history have come in their last seven events.

The Demon Deacons return to action Sept. 27-29 at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
