WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 21 Wake Forest field hockey team downed Northeastern, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.
The Northeastern Huskies entered the game leading the nation with goals per game with 4.71, but a solid day from Senior goalie Isla Bint and the Deacon defense kept the Huskies well below average.
The Deacs enjoyed a substantial shot difference as they led Huskies 23-9, while holding a 6-5 advantage on penalty corners. Sophomore Laia Vancells and freshman Nat Friedman both led the squad with four shots each.
The Deacs struck first in the quarter with a close range goal from Nat Friedman assisted by Laia Vancells.
Following a scoreless second period, Vancells found Kelsey Gill directly in front of the cage to take a 2-0 advantage. The Huskies' Lexie Dunleavy responded in less than a minute as she scored from a corner kick off a defender rebound. Junior Anne van Hoof put the game away with a goal on the left side, assisted from Friedman.
This win is the Demon Deacons' third straight and brings the team's record at 4-5.
Up next, Wake Forest gets back into ACC play and hits the road for Kentucky as it takes on Louisville, Sunday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m.
