CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – 10th-ranked Wake Forest field hockey (1-2) picked up its first win of the season, 2-0 over Penn (0-1) at the ACC/Ivy League Crossover. Freshman Nat Friedman collected her first goals of her Demon Deacon career, finding the back of the net twice.
"I'm really excited for the girls," head coah Jen Averill said. "We had a strong first half. The second half things started to fall apart and we started to do a little too much, but having said that we warded off a frenzy of attacks by Penn. Nat Friedman pulled us through. She connected on a few rips that were key goals for us."
Wake Forest struck first at the 23-minute mark, as Laia Vancells fed Friedman for the goal off a deflection from the left post. Friedman came through for the Deacs in the final quarter, extending Wake's lead to 2-0. This time, senior Kelsey Gill picked up the assist.
Wake Forest controlled a 12-9 shot advantage over the Quakers and held Penn to just one shot for the first half. The Deacs placed seven shots on target while Penn had four shots on goal. Anne van Hoof paced the offense with four shots, while Friedman added three.
Isla Bint recorded a full 60 minutes in the net with four saves to earn the win. She moves to 1-2 on the season.
Wake returns to action on Sunday at 2:30 against fifth-ranked Princeton. The match will be the first ever field hockey broadcast for the ACC Network. Alex Perlman and Leah Secondo will be on the call.
