No. 5 Princeton Outlasts No. 10 Wake Forest in Double Overtime

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - 10th-ranked Wake Forest field hockey (1-3) battled down to the wire with No. 5 Princeton (1-1), but a goal in double overtime sealed the 2-1 victory for the Tigers at the ACC/Ivy League Crossover in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Wake Forest struck first as Kelsey Gill scored her first goal of the season at the 19-minute mark, assisted by sophomore Laia Vancells.
The Deacs held on to the 1-0 lead until the second half when Princeton knotted the game at 1-1 just five minutes into the third quarter. Hannah Davey found the net for the Tigers off a penalty corner with assists from Carlotta Gierke and Julianna Tornetta.
Both sides battled through regulation and remained tied at one a piece at the end of the first overtime period. Princeton scratched its way to the top with a goal in the 76th-minute from Ali McCarthy from close range on the left side.
Princeton put up 18 shots with eight on target, while the Deacons finished with eight shots, five on goal. Abby Carpenter led the team with two shots, while seven other Deacs added one. Isla Bint made her fourth start in the net this season, making six saves, but dropped to 1-3 on the year.
The Demon Deacons will return home to make their 2019 Kentner Stadium debut on Sunday, Sept. 15 at noon as they welcome Northwestern. Admission to all Wake Forest field hockey home games is free.
