Volleyball Sweeps Opening Day of UNF Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - Wake Forest volleyball (5-0) continued its winning streak with two victories on day one of the North Florida Invitational on Friday. The Deacs opened the tournament with a sweep of Mercer before downing host team North Florida, 3-1 in the nightcap.
Wake has started the season 5-0 for the first time since 2013.
"I am really proud of the effort and grit we displayed tonight," head coach Randi Smart said. "Olivia and Caroline came back and both made impacts on the floor. We will make some adjustments and get back to work tomorrow morning against a really strong ECU squad."
Two key players made their 2019 debuts with impact performances. Junior Olivia Saunders made her return in game one with a team-best nine kills and added another team-high 12 kills against UNF. Senior Caroline Rassenfoss saw her first action of the season against the Ospreys, tallying nine kills.
The Deacs hit .338 in the first match of the day behind 34 kills led by Caroline Kuhn and Saunders with nine each. Defensively, Wake dominated, out-blocking the Bears 9-2. Caitlyn Della recorded six total blocks on the day. The Deacons also held Mercer to a .000 hitting percentage as the Bears 23 errors plagued their efforts to find the floor.
In the second match of the day, North Florida came out of the gates strong to take an early 1-0 advantage but Wake powered back to take the next three sets to remain undefeated.
Saunders once again led the way with 12 kills assisted by freshman Peyton Suess also with 12. The Ospreys held a narrow 52-51 kill advantage and hit .429 in the final stanza, but Wake was able to capitalize with 14 blocks in the match and nine aces.
Wake looks to hold on to its perfect record in the final match of the UNF Invitational. The Deacs will face undefeated ECU on Saturday at 11 a.m.
