The Demon Deacons earned their fifth shutout in six games this year.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 25 Wake Forest got back into the win column on Sunday afternoon, defeating UNCW, 2-0, at Spry Stadium to remain undefeated this season.
Hayley Younginer and Hulda Arnarsdottir each found the back of the net to lead the Demon Deacon (5-0-1) offense, while the defense recorded its fifth shutout in six games, limiting the Seahawks (3-2-0) to one shot on goal.
"I thought from the beginning of the game that we set a really good tempo with the ball. It took us awhile to score the first goal but to get it right before halftime was a crucial momentum-swinger," head coach Tony da Luz said. "We wanted to defend with the ball today - keep the ball and move it well. We didn't turn the ball over in bad places, and we attacked well. We didn't give up too many close chances and didn't make any major mistakes, so we can't complain."
In the 44th minute, Hannah Betfort dribbled up from the back line before sending a through ball to Younginer, who poked it past the UNCW keeper for what proved to be the game-winner.
The Deacs added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Madison Hammond sent a long ball to the edge of the box, where Ryanne Brown headed it to Arnarsdottir for a far-post, one-timer finish.
Meghan Kennedy earned the shutout in goal, though she wasn't tested much. Wake Forest had a 17-5 advantage in shots and 7-1 margin in shots on goal.
Wake Forest is back in action on Thursday, traveling to top-ranked North Carolina for a 7 p.m. game on ACCNX.
"We need to rest up a little bit the next couple of days," da Luz added. "We're excited about Thursday's game, they have a new stadium over there. It seems like better teams bring the best out of us, so I'm really excited about it."
