Deacons Sweep Defending Big 12 Champions, 7-0

Wake Forest returns home to Winston by taking all seven points in victory over Kansas
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's tennis team grabbed a key non-conference win over Kansas on Saturday afternoon.
The Demon Deacons (4-1) defeated the defending Big 12 champion Jayhawks, 7-0, at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. Kansas (2-3) started spring as the No. 19 ranked team in the country, slipping out of the rankings in the latest iteration of the ITA rankings.
The Deacs had a dominant start to the afternoon winning the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. Carolyn Campana and Chandler Carter continued to their strong form with a 6-0 win in the No. 2 match.
Minutes later, the No. 10 ranked doubles pairing of MC Meredith and Eliza Omirou closed out the doubles point with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 match.
That momentum carried over into singles play with all six Wake players winning the opening set.
The Campana sisters helped provide a pair of straight-set victories to close out the Jayhawks on Saturday. First it was No. 82 ranked Anna Campana to put a point on the board, winning 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles match.
Following her was Saby Nihalini in the No. 3 singles match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory for the Deacs.
In the No. 1 singles match, it was a matchup of two ranked singles players as No. 44 Carolyn Campana faced No. 63 Sonia Smagina of Kansas. Campana grabbed the clinching point for Wake and a ranked win in straight sets.
Campana captured the first set 6-2 pairing that with a 6-3 win in the second frame.
After clinching the match, Wake Forest continued to add to its total with a fourth straight-set win this time coming from Chandler Carter in the No. 5 spot (6-4, 6-4).
MC Meredith was right behind Chandler as she cruised in the third set with a 6-1 set victory to claim her match.
Eliza Omirou completed the sweep of the Jayhawks with her second ranked singles win of the spring. Facing No. 93 Malkia Ngounoue in the No. 2 match, Omirou claimed the first set, 6-4. The second set was tight throughout and tied at 6-6 it forced a tie breaker.
Omirou pulled out the victory with a 7-4 win in the tie breaker.
