Jack Tiernan and Carter Coughlin claimed the top two spots to lead the men's squad to the tri-meet victory.
KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- Jack Tiernan and Carter Coughlin crossed the finish line together to take the top two spots, leading the Wake Forest men's cross country team to victory over NC State and North Carolina at a tri-meet Friday evening at Ivey Redmon Park.
Tiernan crossed first in the 8k in 24:44.47, alongside Coughlin's mark of 24:44.48, more than five seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.
"They ran great, and it was fitting to have them come in together. They've trained hard and trained well together," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country John Hayes said. "Obviously at ACCs in two weeks, we'll need them to come through again like they did tonight."
The women's squad finished third in the 6k, just three points off of NC State's second-place score. Making her season debut, Elise Wright finished third with a time of 21:20.18, followed by Madeline Rehm's eighth-place finish in 21:36.63. Deacon alum Hannah Brookover was second in 20:10.03 as an unattached competitor.
"That was a great first race back from Elise," women's coach Ashley Bastron said. "I was really pleased with her effort and she finished the race saying 'I've got more,' so that was fantastic and we're excited to have her back in the lineup, We also got another really strong race from Madeline. She's looked great all year, and I think she and Elise will mix it up nicely in two weeks."
On the men's side, Ben Mitchell and Brent Bailey also claimed top-10 finishes. Mitchell was sixth in 24:54.38, while Bailey crossed eighth in 24:56.92.
"We held out some of our guys today," Hayes said. "Ben Mitchell was our third today and we're going to need him coming up at ACCs. We've got to shore up that 4-5 position, that still needs to improve. Our fifth was way too far back and if that happens at ACCs, that'll hurt us."
In the women's race, Anna Campbell finished 13th in 21:59.54, followed by Zoe Clay's time of 22:12.77 and Hana Catsimanes' mark of 22:26.95.
"I think we saw a little bit of progress," Bastron added. "We've still definitely got some areas where we can grow and keep pushing through to get stronger. We worked really hard the last two weeks in training, so some people looked a little tired which is to be expected. I think two weeks from now we'll be in an even better place than we were today. Zoe Clay, that's her first cross country race in nearly two years. To finish in our top five and be that strong for us, we were all in tears post-race with excitement. It was so great to see her out there and impact our top five."
Now, the teams will turn their focus to the ACC Cross Country Championships, set for Oct. 30 in Cary.
"We ran right through this meet, we didn't rest up for it at all," Hayes concluded. "I feel like we've put in a good three-week block of training, so as we settle down and back off a little bit, we'll be really ready to run in two weeks. These guys have worked hard and I've got a lot of confidence that we'll do quite well at ACCs."
"The front runners looked great today," Bastron said. "Anna Campbell, that was a great step in the right direction for us too. She set the tone for the group early, and that competitive fire and energy is so important. I think we brought that in the front of our pack, but we need it in the middle and back of our pack too, so that will be our focus the next two weeks."
