Delmotte’s Overtime Goal Lifts Wake over Duke

10/23/2020 6:12:00 PM | Field Hockey

Lanckohr and Delmotte scored for the Deacs in the victory

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest topped Duke 2-1 in overtime on Friday afternoon on Senior Day after freshman Grace Delmotte netted the golden goal for the Demon Deacons in the 64th minute. Prior to the game, seniors Alexis Grippo, Anne van Hoof and Elisha Evans were honored in the final home game of the 2020 season.

Duke (0-6, 0-4 ACC) tested the Wake Forest (2-5, 1-3 ACC) defense with 15 penalty corners, but could not take advantage of the scoring opportunities. The Blue Devils scored its only goal of the game in the 20th minute on a penalty stroke from Lexi Davidson to take a 1-0 lead.

"(The defense) was the first thing we complimented our team on," head coach Jen Averill said. "We started off pretty sloppy back there, but to be able to have that kind of positive response and build such a wall- I just couldn't be prouder of them. Hats off to Anne (van Hoof) and both of our trails. It was just stellar"

The Demon Deacons answered back in the third quarter as Meike Lanckohr found the back on the net for the second time this season on a pass from Laia Vancells, tying the game at 1-1. Neither team could take the lead in regulation as both sides went into overtime for the second consecutive game.

Four minutes into overtime, Abby Carpenter found Delmotte on the right side of the cage. Delmotte's shot hit the foot of the Duke keeper but bounced into the cage sealing to 2-1 victory as Wake earned it's first ACC win of the season.

"Grace Delmotte and the entire freshman class have really added so much value not only in games but also at practice," said Averill. "They certainly push our level and tempo. We have so many choices for our overtime lineup and to be in that position is just a credit to the talent on the team."

Ally Butler picked up her first win of the season in the cage for the Demon Deacons, making two saves. She was assisted by a wall of defenders led by senior Van Hoof in stopping the corner attacks from Duke.  Tori Glaister made a brief appearance to defend Duke's penalty stroke but conceded the first goal of the game.

Wake Forest will round out the remainder of the 2020 season on the road. The Deacs will have another opportunity with the Blue Devils on Sunday in Durham. Game time is set for noon on ACC Network Extra. At this time, Duke is not allowing fans to attend the game.
