Men’s Soccer Scores 4-1 Victory in ACC Opener

The Demon Deacons used a strong second half with three goals to pull away from NC State in the team’s ACC opener.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Junior forward Kyle Holcomb logged a brace, as Wake Forest on Saturday night defeated NC State 4-1 in the team's ACC opener at Spry Stadium. The victory marks the eighth-straight ACC-opening victory for Wake Forest.
While the Demon Deacons outshot the Wolfpack 6-3 in the first half, the two ACC foes went into halftime knotted at 1-1. In the 36th minute, Holcomb took a pass from sophomore Jake Swallen to score his second goal in as many games to open up the season.
NC State, however, tied it up just before halftime after freshman Jahlane Forbes was called for a foul inside the box. Despite senior goalkeeper Andrew Pannenberg stopping the penalty kick attempt from AJ Seals, Alex Bautista put away a rebound to score the Wolfpack's first, and eventually only, goal of the night.
In the second half, however, Wake Forest took over before securing the three-goal victory. Within the first minute of the frame, Holcomb added his second goal of the contest, taking a pass once again from Swallen and scoring.
Then in the 70th and 71st minutes, senior Machop Chol and sophomore David Wrona scored a pair of goals to put the game away for good.
Wake Forest will play its second of two non-conference games this season next weekend when the Demon Deacons host UAB on Saturday for a 7 p.m. kick-off at Spry. It will be the first meeting between the two schools since 1996.
